Adventure Bike Program

Motorcycles bring to mind the roar of an engine, the wind on your face, and the freedom of the open road. But for many Veterans and First responders, motorcycles represent something more: a lifeline. That’s why Motorcycle Missions developed an Adventure Bike Program. This unique program helps those who’ve sacrificed so much to serve their country and communities heal from trauma and build confidence and community, on two wheels.

What Is the Adventure Bike Program?
Like all Motorcycle Missions programs, it is designed to support veterans and first responders dealing with PTSD. Unlike bike building or track racing, Adventure Bike Program offers an opportunity for participants to explore the therapeutic benefits of nature alongside the exhilaration of riding off-road motorcycles. Riding through trails, tackling challenging terrains, and simply being outdoors in a supportive group setting creates a unique combination of therapy and adventure.

The program sprang from an idea founder Krystal Hess had about creating a space where motorcyclists and the bike-curious could learn new skills and possibly find deep healing while they do it. Having ridden dirtbikes herself, she recognized that there was something uniquely therapeutic about being out in nature on a motorcycle. The Adventure Bike Program set out to bring motorcycle riding and nature together for Veterans and First responders who need a breath of fresh air and a shot of adrenaline in the great outdoors.

Who Is the Program For?
The Adventure Bike Program is open to all Veterans and First responders. However, priority is given to those who need it most—specificaly those who’ve seen combat or been on the front lines of human tragedy and suffering. Those who have dealt with significant trauma are moved to the top of the list. “First responders don’t always get the credit they deserve,” Hess points out. “They see things that can be just as traumatizing as combat, and they carry that with them. This program is about acknowledging that and giving them an outlet for release and healing.”

The application process is simple. Interested participants sign up online, and the Motorcycle Missions team contacts them with details about upcoming ride days. Whether they’ve never touched a motorcycle before or have years of riding experience, there’s a place for everyone.

How It Works
For beginners, the program starts with a foundational day of learning the basics—throttle control, braking, shifting, and more. Once they’re comfortable, participants are encouraged to get their motorcycle endorsement (license to ride motorcycles). This ensures they can fully participate in future rides and continue riding on their own if they choose to.

Experienced riders are assessed based on their skill level. As long as they demonstrate they can safely handle the bike, they’re ready to join the group for adventures. The program approach is highly personalized. “We meet people where they’re at,” Hess explains. “We’ve had some people with zero experience become rock stars by the end of the day, and others who just improve steadily over time. Everyone’s journey is different, and that’s what makes it special.”

The Coaches Behind the Program
A critical element that makes the Adventure Bike Program so successful is its dedicated volunteer coaches. Many of them are Veterans themselves and bring a deep understanding of the challenges participants face. These instructors don’t just teach riding skills, but also create an environment of trust and camaraderie.

  • Chris Sutter: A Navy veteran and one of the program’s fastest riders, Chris is a weekend warrior who takes his family on riding adventures. His expertise and enthusiasm make him an incredible mentor.

  • James Harper: Another Navy veteran, James is a regular coach who combines patience and skill to guide participants through their journey.

  • Carl Eason: While not a veteran, Carl’s passion for riding and teaching makes him a valuable part of the team. His dedication to helping participants gain confidence is unmatched.

  • Kevin Manasir: A veteran whose branch of service adds to the program’s diversity, Kevin contributes to both the dirt bike and trail riding activities, ensuring participants get the most out of every ride.

Each coach plays a vital role, leading rides, teaching techniques, and offering encouragement. Their shared passion for motorcycles and helping others creates a supportive atmosphere that participants often describe as life-changing.

The Bikes and Trails
Motorcycle Missions provides all the necessary gear and bikes, so participants don’t need to bring anything. The program uses a mix of motorcycles, including Honda CRF 250s for trail and motocross track riding and Kawasaki KLR 650s for longer rides on fire roads and varied terrains. These bikes are versatile and beginner-friendly, making them ideal for riders of all skill levels.

Riding locations vary, offering a mix of challenges and experiences:

  • Hidden Falls Adventure Park (Texas): This sprawling park is a favorite for trail rides. It has endless trails, cabins, campgrounds, and even a gift shop. It’s perfect for weekend camping trips, which the program plans to incorporate more in 2025.

  • Murphy’s Motocross: A great spot for motocross and trail riding. While larger adventure bikes may not be suitable for the track, the smaller bikes shine here.

  • Spokes: Another excellent location for dirt biking, though it’s a bit tight for the bigger KLR 650s.

These diverse locations allow participants to experience everything from technical trails to wide-open fire roads, ensuring a little something for everyone.

A Day in the Life of the Adventure Bike Program
A typical ride day runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Participants kickstart their morning with introductions and a safety briefing. Coaches double check that the bikes are ready to go and make sure everyone feels comfortable with the plan for the day.

After gearing up, the group sets out on their first ride. Volunteer coaches, like Chris, James, Carl, and Kevin, lead the way so that everyone stays safe and has a great time. Midday, the group gathers for lunch back at the trailer, sharing stories and some good laughs. Finally, it’s back to the trails for more riding. By 3:00 PM, it’s time to load up the bikes and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Beginning in 2025, Motorcycle Missions will lead some weekends at Hidden Falls Adventure Park where riders will sleep overnight and get even more time in together and on the trails. Reflecting on the program, Hess says, “By the end of the day, everyone is tired but happy. They’re always asking if they can do one more lap. And when they leave, you can see the difference in their faces. They’re lighter, freer.”

Why It Matters
The impact of the Adventure Bike Program goes far beyond the ride itself. For participants, it’s a chance to step out of their comfort zones, connect with others who understand their struggles, and experience the therapeutic effects of nature and adrenaline.

It’s not just about the riding. Being on the trails outdoors takes your mind off the past and puts you 100% into the present moment. For participants struggling with depression, isolation, and mental loops on repeat, it’s powerful medicine.

Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many report improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and a renewed sense of purpose. The camaraderie built during these rides often leads to lasting friendships and support networks.

Looking Ahead
As Motorcycle Missions looks to the future, they’re planning to expand the Adventure Bike Program. Overnight camping trips, like those planned at Hidden Falls Adventure Park, will allow participants to immerse themselves even deeper into the experience. The organization also hopes to reach more Veterans and First responders by growing their team of volunteer coaches and securing additional funding.

How You Can Get Involved
Motorcycle Missions relies on community support to keep these programs running. Donations and sponsorships provide the bikes, gear, and logistics needed to make each ride day possible. Volunteers are needed for logistics, coaching, and running events. By contributing time or making a monetary donation, you can help rescue the rescuers, supporting Veterans and First responders on their journey to healing.

The Adventure Bike Program is more than just a day of riding motorcycles. It’s a transformative experience that brings hope, healing, and connection to those who need it most. By blending adventure, nature, and community, Motorcycle Missions is changing lives, one ride at a time.

If you are or know a Veteran or First responder looking for a fresh start, or if you’re someone who wants to make a difference, Motorcycle Missions has a place for you. Visit motorcyclemissions.org to learn more and get involved. Because sometimes, the best way to move forward is on two wheels.
